February 26–March 3, 2024
In the upcoming week, we will embark on a remarkable journey with our children, focusing on the biblical virtue of honoring and listening to our parents and recognizing their God-given authority. This journey promises not only to deepen our children's understanding of this important virtue but also to strengthen the fabric of our families according to God's design.
At the core of next week’s theme is the biblical concept of "honor." Honor will be explored not just as obedience but as an attitude—a heart posture that demonstrates love, respect, and appreciation for those God has placed in authority over us. This includes expressing gratitude, speaking well of them, and listening intently. We will reflect on scriptures such as Ephesians 6:1-3, which instructs us to "honor your father and mother"—a commandment that comes with a promise of well-being and longevity. We aim to remind our children that honoring our parents is pleasing to the Lord and lays a foundational understanding of authority and respect in all areas of life.
We will delve into the story of Ruth, a narrative that beautifully illustrates loyalty, respect, and the blessings that come from honoring family and God. Ruth's dedication to Naomi, her mother-in-law, even in the face of personal loss, will teach us about the depth and strength of family bonds forged in respect and love.
From the New Testament, we will explore the story of Jesus and the Roman officer. This story will highlight the power of faith and respect for authority. The Roman officer's recognition of Jesus' divine authority and his great faith and humility will teach us that honoring authority, coupled with faith, can lead to miraculous outcomes.
Plan to talk about your own experiences of honoring your parents and the blessings that followed. Sharing personal stories can make the virtue of honor more tangible and relatable for your children.
When you see your child showing honor, whether it's through listening, helping without being asked, or speaking respectfully, plan to acknowledge it. Positive reinforcement can go a long way in encouraging desirable behavior.
Children learn a lot by observation. Let them see you planning to honor your own parents and authorities. Your actions will teach them how to act in their relationships.
Include prayers in your family time that ask for God’s help in cultivating a heart of honor. Praying together will strengthen your family’s spiritual connection and reinforce the importance of the virtue you're focusing on.
The upcoming week is more than just about learning a virtue; it's about weaving that virtue into the very fabric of our daily lives. As we discuss and exemplify honor, we're not just teaching our children how to live; we're guiding them towards a deeper relationship with God and the people He has placed in their lives. Let's use the next week to build a lasting foundation of respect, love, and honor in our families, following God's perfect plan for us.
Warmly,
Jonny & Danika Jordan
We want to help equip your family with knowledge and conversations for you to live and defend your Christian faith.
In recent years, we kept seeing people with our same background walk away from Jesus. In order to prepare our children for the shifting world and culture, we knew we needed to solidify our children's biblical worldview so they will be prepared for the future.
We know it's important to show your children what it means to "live like Christ." We hope that you are inspired to do that with our Biblical Family Virtues.
We reside in Kansas with our 3 children (ages 7, 5, 3). We enjoy being outside and having occasional dance parties.
Blessings, Danika & Jonny Jordan
